Building Community and Awareness Through Inclusive Opportunities: Trillium Health Partners to Open New Accessible Playground

Play is a universal language that brings people together, allowing us to celebrate what unites us rather than what sets us apart. Recognizing this, Trillium Health Resources has been transforming communities since 2015 through its Inclusive Playground Grants—also known as Play Together Accessible Playground Grants.

These initiatives are powerful examples of how the public system can create meaningful change. By leveraging partnerships and resources, Trillium has helped build more than 30 inclusive playgrounds that serve individuals with special needs and physical disabilities, ensuring everyone has the chance to experience the joy of play.

The inclusive playgrounds are designed with accessibility in mind, making them welcoming spaces for individuals of all ages and abilities. Features include:

  • Rubberized Surfaces: Smooth pathways for wheelchairs and assistive devices.
  • Sensory-Friendly Equipment: Play areas designed to engage or calm individuals with sensory needs.
  • Supportive Swings: Full-support swings and Liberty Swings that allow users to remain in wheelchairs.
  • Doublewide Ramps: Spacious ramps for easy access to elevated play areas.

These playgrounds are more than physical structures—they symbolize the power of a public system working at its best, fostering inclusivity and equity in communities.

The most recent example of this impact is the inclusive playground opened in January at the Dr. Raymond B. Pennington Athletic Complex. Built in partnership with the Robeson Lumberton Kiwanis organization, this playground is already a thriving hub of connection and joy.

Trillium’s work underscores how the public system can harness resources to create transformational change. By partnering with local organizations and investing in inclusive initiatives. These playgrounds highlight the public system’s ability to create environments that meet diverse community needs through collaboration and innovation.
